Watching chipmunks dart in and out of our woodpile was one of my favourite childhood past times. Curious and cute, they weigh in around 100 grams and are about 26 cm in length. Chipmunks are unmistakable because of the five dark stripes on their backs and the high pitched chirping sounds they make. British Columbia has four different species of chipmunks that hibernate in winter, periodically waking up to snack on their stored food. They eat nuts, seeds, grasses, fruits, fungi and insects.
